Environmental Conservation in Kenya

There are a range of environmental projects that volunteers can take part in when volunteering in this programme. This work is usually undertaken in partnership with the Director of the Environment (Nakuru district) — Kenyan Government’s environmental conservation branch to promote environmental awareness in the local community. You will also be involved in assessing existing environmental risks around Nakuru and implementing solutions to address those risks and issues.

Your duties will vary but may include:

1. Taking part in the monthly tree planting programme;
2. Assisting with clean up exercises in local villages and slums;
3. Carrying out training and awareness in the community on the need to conserve the environment;
4. Door-to-door training on waste disposal; and
5. Building drainage systems in local communities.

Generally, the first 2 weeks of each month of this programme are spent working on the tree planting project. Tree planting is carried out in arid and semi-arid areas around the Rift Valley and has been designed to encourage water retainment around Lake Nakuru. As a result, we also hope to rehabilitate the local flamingo population.

The last 2 weeks of each month of this programme are spent working on a number of activities designed to promote environmental conservation in the local community.
